The Meaning of Ho’oponopono

Ho’oponopono- A Hawaiian idea for cleaning stuck energies of the self or of reconciling families who’ve been feuding.

Ho’oponopono includes a mantra below and was developed by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len.

The mantras below are the four powerful statements that act as a cleaning agent within us and around us of negative energies, is my understanding.

It’s a cleaning of the programs and energies that can keep us stuck and keep us in limiting beliefs or from being in the state of pure consciousness, love, joy, and peace.

These mantra’s help us to forgive ourselves, have compassion for ourselves, be grateful, help us to overcome and surpass our limiting, stifling beliefs, thoughts, and lower frequency energies such as anger, hatred, rage, frustration, etc.

  1. I love you.
  2. I’m sorry.
  3. Please forgive me.
  4. Thank you.

You can say these phrases as much as you want because there’s always something that needs cleaning in our minds or energy. It will connect us to the Universe, too.

The Divine will guide you. Inspiration will come to you about what you should do. If you are confused about what action to take, keep saying these four mantras and the way will become clearer. Then you can take action on what you are being guided to do.

Saying ‘I love you’ to the Divine will help you out of stuck energies so that you can start being in the present moment and so you can start loving yourself as you are. You are also connected with the Divine where there are no limits and are in the presence of pure love.

‘I love you’…those three words help in the healing of the self. Love everything about yourself even the flaws and imperfections.

If you keep having repeated negative thoughts or ruminating over something, just keep repeating the words I love you, over-and-over again. You can say it out loud or silently to yourself. You can say it before you enter a situation, too.

‘I am sorry’ and ‘please forgive me’ are about acknowledging those programs (or stories or patterns in other words) that are stuck in us and if we say ‘I’m sorry and please forgive me’, this can clear out that energy and make you feel lighter. It’s to help you forgive yourself. These can be patterns either from yourself or from past generations that have been passed down to us.

You might be feeling angry, fearful, anxiety ridden, feel frustration, etc., and that’s how you know something is off inside you.

According to this mantra, you don’t even have to know what’s causing it really, and you can still say these four statements and it’s still supposed to bring peace and calm to you from ‘cleaning’ that stuff out of your system.

Lastly, ‘thank you’ is being grateful that the problem is being cleared and will be good for us and those around us. Gratitude is a great daily practice to have.

“Thank you for erasing this belief from me, thank you for deleting these data, these negativities, these programs, this negative perception out of my body and mind.”

This short prayer is pretty cool, too, so I thought I would include it here:

Short Ho’oponopono Cleansing Prayer

“Oh, infinite Divine Mind,
Through my beloved High Self,
Cleanse this unit of all negativity,
Both within and without,
That it may be a perfect vessel
for Your Presence.
I am sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.”
From the book “At Zero” by Joe Vitale.
